Mindset coaching to reduce anxiety at school
Some of the effects of stress and anxiety in schools can lead to:

Having low self esteem tends to make a person ignore the positive aspects of themselves and life in general, so they will primarily focus on negative things. They could be having worthwhile experiences and be a genuinely likeable person, but because they dismiss the positive things these events don’t seem real to them. Leaving this unhelpful or fixed mindset unaddressed can cause more severe problems later on in life as they don’t experience things as much as they should. By helping them manage their thoughts, you help them control their negative thoughts and maintain a higher self esteem, further improving how they feel in any situation. Improving their lives in the playground, in the exam hall, or as they grow into young adults.
Mindful therapy for starting secondary school
New situations can be anxiety inducing for children, going from being the big fish in primary school to the smallest as they progress to secondary school. They have to learn to mix with new people all of which have varying beliefs and backgrounds, which can be confusing and stressful – leading to anxiety.
When children transition from being top achievers in primary school, they can be hit quite hard when they aren’t at the top in secondary. These struggles of maintaining what they could do before can lead to feelings of failure and not being good enough. Ultimately these feelings can reduce the child’s self esteem, potentially causing depression and anxiety.
A common scenario I face is when a child gets into their chosen grammar school, high in confidence that they’ve met the bar as a top achiever, only to realise there are now hundreds of other students who are equal or of greater ability. Suddenly with the child no longer being top of the class, they realise a lot of effort and study has to go into their success. Often within the first few weeks the child will feel down and useless compared to their peers. They might struggle to address these feelings and take it out on themselves, believing they’re not as good and fall into self doubt – escalating the negative emotions and further dividing their academic ability.
